Temporary Shortage List

The 52 occupations on the Temporary Shortage List, with their standard and lower going rates.

Rules checked against GOV.UK: 6 November 2026

The Temporary Shortage List covers 52 Medium Skilled SOC 2020 codes. Under Appendix Skilled Worker SW 6.1A, a code only counts as on the list where the application uses a certificate of sponsorship issued before 31 December 2026. GOV.UK publishes a standard and a lower going rate for each.

The rule

A SOC 2020 occupation code (or, where relevant, an eligible job within a SOC 2020 occupation code) is only included on the Temporary Shortage List where: (a) it appears in the list below; and (b) an application has been made using a certificate of sponsorship issued by a sponsor to an applicant before 31 December 2026. (Appendix Skilled Worker, SW 6.1A)

Standard rate or lower rate

GOV.UK's Temporary Shortage List page says:

  • The standard rate applies to people who got their first certificate of sponsorship after 4 April 2024.
  • The lower rate applies to people who got the certificate of sponsorship for their first Skilled Worker visa before 4 April 2024 and have continually held one or more Skilled Worker visas since then.

The page also says that for Medium Skilled jobs on the list, applications can be made when switching to the route, applying for entry clearance, or extending. The salaries are based on a 37.5-hour week and must be pro-rated for other working patterns. Salary discounts can apply: see when you can be paid less.

The 52 codes on GOV.UK's publication match the list in Appendix Skilled Worker SW 6.1A. This is checked on every update.
